The busy market town of Penrith lies in the lovely Eden Valley, to the north east of the Lake District and a few miles north of Lake Ullswater. Penrith makes the perfect base from which to explore the Eden Valley, the northern lakes and the north Pennines. The attractive town is an important shopping centre, with a good mix of traditional shops and sophisticated arcades.

Itinerary

Day 1: Leisurely outward journey to Penrith spending four nights at the Shap wells Hotel arriving early afternoon.
Day 2: Full day Carlisle & The Eden Valley. We follow the valley of the River Eden, and criss-cross the Settle to Carlisle railway as we head through beautiful countryside to Carlisle. The town has an interesting history trail, pedestrian shopping streets and a fine example of a Victorian market hall which is open Monday to Saturday.
Day 3: Day of leisure in Shap Wells (an optional excursion will be available if required)
Day 4: Full day Keswick, Cockermouth & Maryport. Heading through the lovely scenery of the northern Lake District, we first visit the attractive coastal town of Maryport, with a maritime history going back 2000 years. Next is Cockermouth  where William Wordsworth’s Birthplace and the Castle can be visited. We end the day at delightful Keswick on Derwentwater.
Day 5: Depart after breakfast for the homeward journey via Kendal arriving late afternoon.
