The small hamlet of Newby Bridge nestles near the southern end of Lake Windermere, the largest lake in England, on the River Leven a short distance from Grange-over-Sands in the beautifully picturesque Lake District. Newby Bridge takes its name from a five-arched stone bridge which was built over the river in 1651. The quiet hamlet has its own railway station
on the preserved Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, which operates trains between Haverthwaite and the terminus at  Lakeside.

Itinerary

Day 1: Leisurely outward journey to the Lake District spending four nights at the Newby Bridge Hotel arriving early afternoon.
Day 2: Full day Windermere & Coniston. We explore the southern Lake District, viewing these two beautiful lakes. Windermere is the largest in the National Park, with lots of boating activity. Coniston is more peaceful and surrounded by high hills. We stop in Bowness, where time will be available for an optional boat trip.
Day 3: Full day Grange Over Sands, Barrow & the Dock Museum. Our first port of call is the Victorian seaside resort of Grange Over Sands. We then move on to the port of Barrow in Furness and a visit to the excellent Dock Museum tracing the area’s history from Viking invasions to more modern maritime history. Wednesday is market day in Barrow.
Day 4: A free day to relax and enjoy the local area.
Day 5: Depart after breakfast for the homeward journey via Kendal arriving late afternoon.
