County Mayo is located in the province of Connacht on the west coast of Ireland with the Atlantic Ocean lying to the west  and the River Shannon to the east. This largely rural county is often referred to as “Hidden Ireland”. It is a mainly rural  area which is often overlooked on the tourist trails with its wide open countryside, spectacular and rugged coastline,  quaint villages such as Cong were John Fords famous film the Quiet Man and Maureen O’Hara was filmed.

Itinerary

Day 1: Travel through North Wales to Holyhead for an afternoon crossing to Dublin. Travel on to our overnight stay in the Dublin area.
Day 2: Travel across Ireland to Ballina and spend 4 nights at the Downhill House Hotel. This evening will feature a “Welcome to Ireland” talk with Irish coffeelesson & tasting.
Day 3: Excursion via Pontoon Bridge and Castlebar to the popular town of Westport with its spectacular backdrop of Croagh Patrick Mountain. After time in the town we continue to Achill Island, home to some of Europe’s most impressive cliff  landscapes. Return to Westport via Bangor Erris, passing the Nephin Beg mountain range. This evening will feature an Irish themed quiz at the hotel with a small prize for the winning team.
Day 4: A leisurely day spent in and around Ballina. A fun evening is in prospect with a chance to learn a traditional Irish activity such as the Bodrhan (drum), dancing or a light hearted introduction to the Gaelic language.
Day 5: Head via Foxford where there is an interesting Woollen Mill, and Charlestown to the lovely City of Sligo. Return over the Ox Mountains with lovely views of Sligo Bay. Tonight is Ceilidh night at the hotel with traditional Irish music and a chance for a bit of “craic”.
Day 6: Travel across Ireland’s scenic route to Dublin for an overnight stay.
Day 7: Morning ferry crossing to Holyhead and travel homeward.
