Discover all the Lake District has to offer
A Lake District holiday offers the perfect way to explore the great outdoors. There are activities for both adventure-seekers and those who prefer to enjoy the simple beauty of the nature surrounding them. From your base in Kendal you’ll have the opportunity to visit the attractions and sights you’d like to see. Visit the Lake District to see all of the following popular destinations:
Scafell Pike: With an elevation of 978 metres, Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England. Scafell, as well as its surrounding fells, make for beautiful scenery everyone will love to take in. Those who are feeling more adventurous may choose to summit Scafell Pike as part of the National Three Peaks Challenge.
Wastwater: Wastwater is England’s deepest lake with a depth of 79 meters. It also spans an area of 4.8 kilometres by 540 meters. As a glacial lake, it was formed in a glacially over-deepened valley and is surrounded by some of England’s highest mountains, including Scafell Pike.
Kendal Castle: Built in the 12th Century, Kendal Castle sits atop a glacial drumlin offering beautiful views and a rich historical past. A visit here will teach you more about the castle, its people and the life of the town, as you view displays showing medieval objects, reconstructions of the castle, and more.
Beatrix Potter Gallery: Located in Hawkshead, this gallery is home to an annually-changing exhibition of a selection of Beatrix Potter’s original drawings and illustrations. You’ll be able to get up-close to beautiful art pieces from your favourite tales, as well as rarely-seen objects from Beatrix’s life.
Windermere Lake Cruise: View the stunning scenery of this beautiful part of the country from the water of Lake Windermere. You can choose to do a short return and see the highlights or opt for a three-hour trip around the entire lake.
Brockhole Visitor Centre: Visit the National Park’s Visitor Centre to make a plan for what to see within the park. Situated within 30 acres of magnificently terraced gardens, the centre offers its own sights to take in, stretching all the way to the shore of Windermere.
Rydal Mount: Visit this historic house in the village of Rydal, which was the home of William Wordsworth from 1813 until his death in 1850. Known as Wordsworth’s favourite home, Rydal Mount offers fantastic views of Windermere, Rydal Water, and the surrounding fells.
Laurel and Hardy Museum: Laurel and Hardy are one of the most iconic British comedy duos, entertaining audiences with their slapstick comedy from the late 1920s to the 1940s. This museum is located in Ulverston, the birthplace of Stan Laurel, and houses many artefacts and memorabilia that detail the history of the classic British entertainers.
Keswick Brewery: Enjoy a pint of delicious locally-made beer while taking in the beautiful scenery. Beer enthusiasts may enjoy getting an up-close look at how the beer is brewed with a tour of the facility. And of course, you can’t leave without enjoying a beer in the Flying Fox Bar where it is brewed.
Muncaster Castle: Spend the day exploring this haunted castle as well as its Himalayan gardens and bluebell woods. Owned by the Pennington family for more than 800 years, this landmark is full of charm and history. You can also enjoy a flying display at the Hawk & Owl Centre located on the grounds.
